Leadership. Is it given to everyone?

How leadership is linked to success

What is considered success and how to achieve it? Piles of papers have been written on this subject - from primitive articles by network marketing leaders, where success comes down to the number of banknotes, to thick academic publications, where broad lists of success preconditions have been deduced in an almost scientific way.

Attention deserves a concise, capacious and simple formula for success, which was brought out by business coach Radislav Gandapas:

A successful person can be considered one who has an excess (surplus) of four vital resources - time, energy, status, money.

A scarcity in at least one of the resources suggests that success has not yet been achieved. Moreover, the selected sequence is not accidental:

An individual's free time is obtained as a result of desire.
Free energy - as a result of working on yourself.
Excess status - as a result of work on oneself and the environment.
And money - as a result of skillful use of the first three resources.

And here is the “status" - this is leadership. Without leadership - even the most insignificant, at least in some ways, but still leadership - a surplus of status is impossible, and hence success as such.
What is the difference between management and leadership

There is an opinion that the terms “management” and “leadership” are identical. Once a manager is a leader, and once a leader, then a priori is already a leader. But this is not so. Each concept is based on completely different functions.

“Management is the science of doing things right. Leadership is the science of doing the right thing, ”says Peter Drucker, one of the most influential management theorists of the 20th century.

It is a mistake to use the term “leadership” in relation to people at the very top of the managerial hierarchy. It is also called “management” of people at a lower level in the same organization, and all the rest - personnel, specialists and employees.

In today's world, leadership is required from almost everyone and everyone, regardless of which professional group they are in. Leadership is not a set of characteristics. Leadership is a style of behavior.
Can everyone be leaders

In fact, we can all basically be leaders. It’s like every acorn in principle an oak. But oak and “basically” oak are slightly different things. In order for an acorn to become an oak, it needs to fall into the right soil. Having fallen, it is necessary that his pig does not eat, so that the rain and the sun work in the required mode, so that the lawn mower does not mow it.

So the man - you have to get into the right environment. And he will blossom. But not everyone knows what “their” environment is and where to look for it. In addition, there is also a “fate factor” - when a person was born at the wrong time and in the wrong place.

But! It is safe to say that in that civilization in which we were born, every healthy individual was tested for leadership at least once in his life. Each one! In childhood, some leaders flourished, in adolescence - others, in youth - third, in the army - fourth, in high school - fifth and so on. And only a few carried their leadership from the nursery to adulthood, because they were able to stay in the shoes of the leader.
Where does leadership begin?

Leadership begins with good blood chemistry, which gives a surplus of energy, and then there follows a search for an idea or even a super idea where this surplus can be drained.

Energy without an idea leads to the effects of “A mad dog is seven kilometers away” and “A fool with initiative is more dangerous than a thief.” And the mass of ideas in the head without energy is reflected in the proverb “A fool riches with thought.”

There should be a certain “mechanism” between the idea and energy, which will lead to a balance between these two factors and will be useful in three areas of human activity:

    usefulness for oneself;
    utility for the "earth" (society);
    usefulness for “heaven” (charitable value).

Ideas covering all three types of utility at the same time have the most elusive competitive advantages. Accordingly, this is the key to long-term leadership. Otherwise, leadership is easy to lose.
The moment of loss of leadership

At the time of the loss of leadership, few people pay attention, but it is a consequence. And the reason for it is either a change in the environment, or abuse of a leader in relation to the environment.

When there is a lack of use, then the King’s retinue more than compensates for it with joy. But when the "king" begins to abuse, then a critical mass of enemies is gradually gaining. Which, in the end, leads to mass dashes of the “retinue” to another “king”.
How to distinguish a pseudo-leader from a true leader

There are two characteristics that help to see the pseudo-leader leader behind the screen.
1. According to the concept of the leader

A true leader professes the concept of a creator, not the concept of a leader. And therefore, he does not consider it necessary to protect his territory from attacks by other leaders. He (the leader) knows that whoever encroaches on his territory, authority or initiative will receive only a temporary victory. Over time, everything will return to square one.

How to work with people who annoy you

We answer the recruiter the question: "How do you work with people who annoy you?"

If you think that it makes no sense to ask about this in an interview, we hasten to pull you. There is a sense, and it is not a trick at all. Moreover, this question is quite common in interviews, and Work.ua advises him to think over his answer in advance.

They ask about irritability not in order to cause a stupor or additional tension in you - they just want to understand how conflicted you are, how easily you get irritated and whether you fit into an already formed team.

The question may sound directly during the interview, or you can find it in the questionnaire during employment. Be prepared for it and focus your answer on what will not scare off a potential employer.
1. Be honest about what's bothering you.

Even the most patient person can lose his temper. Therefore, you probably know what behavior you do not like in working moments. Feel free to tell the interviewer about this - so you can protect yourself from work that will corrode your nervous system.
2. Show that they are not irritable in details

At the same time, employers do not want to hire people who will be annoyed by every little thing. It is too easy to fall into the trap of answering this question, showing a lack of patience or understanding towards others.
3. Give an example of how you work with annoyance

Try to describe a situation when you were annoyed at work. This could happen due to the incompetence of the employee, the colleague’s unwillingness to make contact, some special manners that you do not particularly understand, and many other cases.

As an example, Work.ua tips on how to work with unpleasant people can help you.
How to work with someone you do not like

Adam Savage and Jamie Heinemann, hosted by many of America's favorite American science-fiction television shows on the Discovery Channel, who you can recognize in the photo, together make an interesting and important project. But they are not good friends. Moreover, according to Adam, they do not communicate on the set and outside and wildly annoy each other.

But even such a labor union will be productive if you follow the 5 principles of work.
1. Respect others

Having respect is critical. If you respect someone, it is not necessary to sympathize with him in order to have a successful working relationship with him. Well, of course, you need to love the common cause to which you devote time.
2. Understand the root causes

Start with yourself, because the cause of irritability may be in you. There is an opinion that we do not like in those around us what is in ourselves, but what we are afraid to admit to ourselves. Is it only for an innocuous habit that you hate a person working with you side by side? Often, the point is our unconscious desire to find a reason for irritation that would distract from the main problems.
3. Do not succumb to provocations

We spend so much time and energy discussing the shortcomings of someone who drives us crazy, that we forget about the main purpose of our stay at work. Therefore, focus on work and simply ignore if your colleague is a systemic and frank provocateur.

Such people need a response, and your task is to remain calm and ignore. Do not prepare the ground for further actions, be calm and smiling. Whether it is an energy vampire who “feeds” on other people's emotions, or someone who wants to survive you from the team.
4. Do not pay attention to social

That is, when relations at work are exclusively business, in which there is no place for any personal experiences, this only helps in the work. Plus, terminating such a relationship is much easier, because you have clearly defined boundaries of interaction.
5. But focus on different things

People who are not very pleasant to each other can be simply different, who have little in common. But this is what helps to notice the various nuances of the work, which is very useful for a project that is being improved under the weight of different opinions.

2020 career trends

Corporate Culture and Socially Responsible Business

In the near future, we will see the growth of a socially responsible business, which seeks to increase profits by promoting the rational and economical use of resources, simultaneously solving social, ethical and environmental issues.

Companies will strive not only to increase the indicator of loyalty (everyone who knows about the company and wants to work in it), but also to increase the indicator of involvement. For this, companies will actively speak and promote corporate values to the masses and build warm partnerships with employees: encourage initiatives, open information about the state of business and the company as a whole, relax together, take care of employees' health, comfort and come up with other goodies.

Active will be the promotion of a positive atmosphere within the team and the socially significant brand through PR media, conferences, lectures. After all, sharing knowledge and experience is not at all scary for business: nobody will most likely be able to catch you, because you started earlier.
Remote work, mobile technology

Despite the growing popularity of remote work and flexible schedules, many employers still do not trust the new trends and prefer to control employees. But those who will shift the focus on labor productivity, rather than the amount of time spent at the workplace, will increasingly master mobile technologies for remote work and design workstations so that the employee can work comfortably from anywhere in the office.

Remote work can be effective for completely different areas of work and the size of companies - from giant corporations to small private structures. But, nevertheless, not for all industries. Those who are in contact with customers and are engaged in production, still can not afford it.
Increase the amount of information processed by recruiters

Changes are also coming in the selection of personnel - the emphasis is shifting to friendly recruiting (avoiding tricky issues) and new approaches to processing a large amount of information. But at the same time, recruiters will conduct impulsive and spurring hiring campaigns, expecting a worthy response from candidates.

Many new communication channels with candidates increase the reach of the audience: on the one hand, recruiters have a choice and the opportunity to convey information to a large number of potential candidates in one click. But there is a flip side to the coin: a sharply increasing number of applications, appeals and resumes that need to be considered, sorted and which need to be answered.

Therefore, the emphasis will shift to multimedia hiring: video appeals to future candidates, video summaries, video interviews. This format is well remembered and saves time.
Focus on employees with HiPo

The demand will remain for techies who are associated with Internet technologies and speak at least one of the programming languages, for WEB designers, for working professions and for humanities who would competently pack and sell everything that techies would do.

Also, recruiters will prey on candidates with high potential (High Potential) - proactive, developing a personal brand, proactive, talented, energetic, skillfully working with soft skills, while teamwork.

On average, HiPo make up from 2% to 5% of the entire audience. HiPo understand that you can make money in different ways and often go to a specific job in order to enjoy it. Therefore, there are already a lot of HiPo in consulting, which is considered a very interesting job.

Interest in employees with high potential has a very material explanation:

So fast changes are taking place in the business that only talented managers can adapt it to all changes.
In the banking sector, interest in HiPo awakens as access to public funding becomes more difficult.
Industrial companies are also forced to seek domestic resources to rely on them in times of crisis.

Online education

Being educated today is in fashion, and online education is a trend that will only develop. Instead of sitting on a student bench at the age of 40, you can find the right resource and study at any time convenient for you. In addition, if desired, you can find many programs of reputable universities, both domestic and foreign. Consider developing constantly and not spending a lot of money.

It may seem to some that this is not just a trend, but a reality. Yes, only for a small number of Ukrainian companies (mainly those who work with foreign investments). But the business of Ukraine will strive for such career trends. Will we wait or contribute to change?

Should I go back to my former employer

When you should not come back

The idea of returning to one of the previous places of work most often arises in the period of an acute desire for stability, and therefore, in a situation of stress. The decisions made during this period are not always correct. Therefore, just do not rush to take them.

But if the withdrawal is connected with the fact that you did not fit into the corporate culture, you have a conflict with your bosses, or you were completely fired, then it is unlikely that the situation will change when you return.
When can I go back and how to pass an interview for those who decided to return to the former company

Work.ua identifies 4 situations where you can afford to return to your former company, and gives advice on how to get an interview in this case.
1. When you were called and the reasons for leaving described above are not about you

If you left “for love” and didn’t burn the bridges behind yourself, then nothing terrible will happen in contact with the former employer in any case.

Do not talk too much about past experience in this job at the interview, it will look as if you miss it, even if it is not. If you are interested in a specific question about things that you liked or didn't like, be careful not to give the interviewer the impression that you are stuck in the past. If you ask: “Is it still customary for you? I liked it very much, ”- it will be inconvenient if they answer you:“ Not anymore. ”
2. The company has changed a lot

If what previously didn’t suit you has ceased to be relevant, and you are sure of it, try to evaluate the company as completely unfamiliar. Tightly, meticulously, fixing thoughts that "well, at least something was tinted." If there are real changes - go.

At the interview, everything should look as if there were no problems left, so it’s better to talk about those things in the company that you lacked in a new place. It will not be superfluous.
3. You come up

The best option: you gained valuable experience, you were given a new position. In this case, go and work with pleasure. The only advice: if you left the company for the first time because there was nowhere to grow, then you may encounter this situation in the second run.

Here at the interview you have all the trump cards in your hands. Go ahead.
4. You are a startup

If you are an unsuccessful start-up, then it is better to speak briefly and with dignity about such stories at the interview: I tried it, it didn’t work, I objectively did not have enough experience in those areas that are beyond professional competencies, I determined the following growth points for myself.

If you came out of a story that managed to take shape in a real business case, you can, with a clear conscience, present this at an interview as a project in which you managed to build up your experience:

    You have an understanding of the mechanics of business processes;
    responsibility for the result;
strengthened competencies and mastered related ones.

But HR remains in danger that the candidate who once left the company will try to do it again if a good opportunity presents itself. Therefore, it is very important in the interview to clearly explain why you miss your previous work (for example, because she strives for innovation) and how you plan to use the experience that you got in your new job in the long term.
How to explain 2 identical places of work in the resume

We worked in one company, moved to another, returned, and now you go to the third. Natural question: “How then to explain such things in a resume to a future employer? Will the new employer be embarrassed by repeated work experience in one company? ”

On the example of a situation with a return to a former job, it will be easier for you to talk about motivation and career plans at an interview. In any other situations, the employer, especially when it comes to the vacancy of a specialist in intellectual labor, will prefer an uninfected person who is able to make productive and innovative decisions, like this.

Well, as before, the most important things for the employer are the term of your work for this or that employer, the ability to bring things to the end and make informed decisions.

How to get a job when not enough qualifications

Prove to your employer that you can solve company problems

The situation in the labor market is actually like this: diplomas, certificates and other papers are important in some industries - for example, in medicine or law. In other areas, the requirements for a future employee are sometimes surprisingly flexible. And this is a sin not to use.

If you prove to the future employer that you can solve his problem, your certificates will cease to play such an important role. That is how Raghav Haran received job offers that required a candidate's degree or years of experience.

Start doing work before you get it - create a “project for an interview.” A simple example: if you are applying for a job as a designer, try developing a new design for the company you want to work for and explain to the employer why you made certain decisions when creating the project.
“Project for an interview”

Four steps with which you can make a “project for an interview” and bring it to your ears.
Step 1: Limit your search to a few vacancies that interest you most

This is not such a quick process as sending resumes to many companies. But more effective. Remember the three rules when looking at job offers:

If you are a little short of the number of years of experience - this is normal. If only not too many years. For example, with experience per year, you can get a job that requires three years. But the one that requires seven years is hardly possible.
If your level of education is lower than declared in the vacancy, this is normal. But not only if it comes to vacancies requiring professors of science.
Make sure you can really do the job. You may not have the right papers, but you must have the skills.

If you find 3-5 such positions, go to the second step.
Step 2: Understand What You Will Do In This Work

If you understand what is expected of you at a new job, it will be easier for you to make a suitable “project for an interview”. To do this, you will need a job description. Determine that your future responsibilities do not require internal company information to which you do not yet have access, and follow through.
Step 3: Make a separate project for each company you want to get a job with

So you can show specific employers that you can solve their problems.
When our hero submitted a resume for the position of a product development specialist, he tested the company's products, based on the results, created design proposals and sent them to the company. Such developments allowed Raghav to get interviews at large companies like Quora and Airbnb, and Shutterstock created a position specifically for him.
Step 4: Send the project to the company

To do this, you need to find the right person who will pay attention to your achievements.

If you send a project to a small company, you can directly contact the general director or the head of the department you are interested in. You can reach them through social networks or mail.

Template example:

Hello [name]!
My name is [your name], and I noticed that you are looking for an employee, and became interested in your vacancy. I thought it would be useful [here is a brief description of your project] to show my interest and value to the company.
[Submit your project]
A little about yourself: [a small description of your experience that will help you get a job: 2-3 sentences]
Thank you for your attention, I hope to hear an answer about further actions!
Yours faithfully,
[Your name]

If you send the project to a large company, it is more difficult. It’s better to get an interview first. When sending a resume, in a cover letter it is worth writing that you have such a project ready, and send it to someone who will communicate with you when hiring you for some time before the appointed date.

Here is a template for this case:

Hello [name]!
[Employee Name] reported that [date] we have scheduled an interview for [vacancy] in the company.
[submit project]
I decided that it is better to send the project now if you want to discuss it at an interview (and if this is acceptable, of course).
Thanks for attention. Regards [your name]

“Whenever I followed the above steps, the interview went super-smooth, and in most cases I was hired,” Raghava Harana admits.

“But it does not work in my field! My area is different! And in general, everything is not so in Ukraine! ”You say. This is just human behavior. People want their problem to be resolved, so they prefer to hire someone who is already working on it. Just try it. It works.
